For thousands of years, affirmations and mantras have helped people to motivate themselves, comfort themselves or to steady themselves emotionally.

They can motivate by stimulating courage or determination, comfort as an expression of self-compassion; and steady the emotions by calming the mind with a familiar, helpful thought.

Practical and backed by research

The value of affirmations and mantras has been backed up by research. They are not mystical but very practical and you can benefit from them in your daily life. That’s why It isn’t unusual to see elite sports people using affirmations or mantras to steady themselves at crucial points in a game.

What happens in the event?

In this one-hour event, we will look at affirmation and mantras, at the research about them and at how they affect brain and behaviour, and of course we will look at specific mantras which you may wish to adopt.

You will receive material following the event to help you to practise what you have learned.

This will include a list of affirmations for various areas of your life and from which you might choose two or three to use now and in the future.

I will also send anyone who books, a link to a recording of the event (which won't identify anybody except myself). If you're not free to watch the event live, don't worry - everyone who books will get access to the recording and in fact most people opt to watch the recording instead.

Who I am

I am a counsellor and mindfulness teacher and the author of books published in several countries and languages. My books include Acceptance and Daily Calm. My newsletter, The Daily Bell, has been published every day since 2012. In previous career, I wrote about health and social affairs for The Irish Times. I am also an introvert and suffered (that’s the word for it) from shyness in my youth.
